his may be progress towards a greener future. KXXV-TV reports that Sid Miller, the Texas Agriculture Commissioner, announced on Wednesday, April 8, that a Killeen farmer has been selected as the first farmer granted an industrial hemp license in the state of Texas.

Congress passed the Farm Bill in 2018 which paved the way for states to put into place hemp programs for commercial production. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott signed the bill into law in June of 2019. That effectively allows the state of Texas to manufacture hemp for use in retail sale including consumable hemp products know as CBD.

Commissioner Sid Miller says, “Let’s face it, Texas farmers and ranchers needed some good news, I am happy that I can be the one to deliver it. I know Texas farmers have been eagerly waiting for a chance at these hemp licenses and now the wait is over.”

Farmers can apply for an industrial hemp license by visiting The Texas Department of Agriculture's website.
