Growing up in North Dakota, it's safe to say that I've walked on a few iced over ponds and lakes. How else do you get to the ice house, well, beside driving on it. But when we did, the lake was covered with snow, and the water was never that clear to begin with, so the ice looked dirty. Obviously mountain lakes are a bit different.

Over in Slovakia, some hikers came across a frozen mountain lake in the High Tatras Mountains. It was so clean, that when it froze over it looks like you're walking on glass.
