While some companies are relaxing their face mask policy, United Airlines is toughening up theirs.

According to a press release from United Airlines, the company will be buckling down on their face mask policy to protect passengers and crew from the spread of COVID-19.

Beginning June 18, any passenger who refuses to wear a face mask will not be allowed to fly. To take it a step further, United Airlines will also place that passenger's name on international travel restriction list. Each incident will be reviewed and will be the basis for how long the passenger's name remains on the restriction list.

"U.S. airlines are very serious about requiring face coverings on their flights. Carriers are stepping up enforcement of face coverings and implementing substantial consequences for those who do not comply with the rules," said A4A President and CEO Nicholas E. Calio. "Face coverings are one of several public health measures recommended by the CDC as an important layer of protection for passengers and customer-facing employees."

There are exceptions for those who cannot wear a face mask due to medical conditions, and also small children. Flight attendants will offer face masks to guests not wearing one, and will explain United Airlines' policy on health and safety. If a passenger continues to be non-compliant after a second attempt at de-escalation, then the flight attendant will record the incident and passengers information for the restriction list.
