The Texas Senate has approved legislation aimed at lowering the out-of-pocket cost of insulin for Texans with diabetes.

Senate Bill 827 calls for a copay cap of $50 for insulin. Republican Lois Kolkhorst of Brenham authored the bill with an assist from Democrat Cesar Blanco of El Paso. It passed the Texas Senate Thursday, March 25, with all 31 state senators voting in favor.

Forbes reports that insulin prices have been rising for decades. They report that the U.S. represents 15% of the global insulin market but generates nearly 50% of its revenue.

If passed, the insulin copay cap would take effect in Texas starting September 1, 2021.
