News 10 is reporting that a Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper who was killed in the line of duty last year was honored Thursday evening as the one-year anniversary of his tragic death draws near.

During a routine traffic stop on Interstate-35 in Temple on Nov. 4, 2017, Thomas Nipper was hit from behind and killed.

"We're here as his work family along with his immediate family in remembrance of that tragic event," said DPS Sgt. David Roberts.

Nipper had been a part of the Texas DPS for almost 35 years.

On Thursday night, hundreds congregated outside of the Texas DPS office in Temple to pay their respects.

“Not only is his immediate family here, but DPS and retirees from all over that knew and worked with Thomas Nipper, knew the way he was as a person, have come together to memorialize him and talk about him because there are lots of good stories,” said Roberts.

Many of Nipper's DPS colleagues paid their respects near the memorial stone placed in his honor outside of the office.
