The Army CID and San Antonio police are searching for answers after a Texas drill sergeant was found fatally shot inside her car in the River City early New Year's Day.

According to a report from the San Antonio Express News, 30-year-old Fort Sam Houston Drill Sergeant Jessica Mitchell was found inside a vehicle on I-10 in San Antonio with multiple gunshot wounds.

Authorities originally responded to the scene in response to a stranded or stalled vehicle in one of the highway lanes. Officers found a white Dodge Challenger with multiple gunshots to the driver's side door and window.

"Officers opened the vehicle door and checked for a pulse on the victim (who) appeared to have been struck multiple times," police said.

Mitchell was transported to University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Mitchell, was on holiday leave from her assignment as a dental specialist at the U.S. Army Medical Center of Excellence (MEDCoE), on JBSA-Fort Sam Houston. Mitchell had been working at the MEDCoE since August 2019 and had previously served at a JBSA dental clinic since October 2017.

Mitchell was a 5th generation member of the military, and is survived by her 10-year-old son. The Texas Drill Sergeant's family is devastated and desperate for answers. Just a few years ago they lost Jessica's brother to a unsolved shooting when he was just 18.

The family is asking that any one who may have witnessed the shooting reach out to police.
