As electric vehicles (EVs) become more common nationwide, many Texans are wondering if owning an EV in Midland-Odessa is worthwhile, considering the region's unique driving patterns and terrain.

The short answer, it can technically work, especially for daily local driving.

However, the overall experience of owning an EV can be considerably different from owning a traditional gas-powered vehicle.

Charging Infrastructure in Midland-Odessa

Midland and Odessa have some public charging stations, but they’re far less dense than what you’d find in major urban areas.

According to mapping data, Midland has roughly 19 public charging stations (including Level 2 and DC fast chargers) within about 9 miles, though only a small share are fast chargers suitable for quick stops.

In Odessa, there are around 18 public charging stations. However, this depends on how you count public ports and maps, with several DC fast-charge capable units sprinkled around town.

It is important to note that there are no public charging stations in West Odessa.

The Problem is Bigger Than Infrastructure

Overall, infrastructure is a major problem with owning an electric vehicle, regardless of where you reside.  You simply do not see charging stations in abundance like you do gas stations.

Even with improved infrastructure, the perception remains that EV charging takes significantly longer than refueling a gas car.

In contrast, filling a gas tank takes only minutes, and gas stations are ubiquitous throughout West Texas.

An EV stop at a fast charger might take 30–60 minutes to add meaningful range, whereas a gasoline fill-up takes under five minutes.

For long highway trips outside the Basin, careful planning becomes essential, as charging stations are spaced farther apart than in densely populated coastal states.

An EV in Midland-Odessa can be a good option for many drivers, especially those who can charge at home and primarily use it for local trips.

However, compared to gas vehicles, which offer easy refueling at almost every location, EV ownership in the region still presents trade-offs in convenience and charging access that drivers should consider.
