When most people are gathering to enjoy an end of summer, three day, holiday weekend that is usually full of cookouts, pool parties, and family fun, one woman was living her last day in Killeen, Texas. Just a little after 2:30 AM on September 1st, Valeri Favila, 22, was fatally shot.

The Killeen Police Department reported they were called to the 800 block of Atlas Avenue for a call of shots fired, and discovered Favila suffering from a gunshot wound. Lifesaving measures were initiated until additional emergency services could arrive on scene to assist in the treatment of Favila.

Favila was then transported to a medical center after being shot in Killeen

Favila arrived at Carl R. Darnall Medical Center on post, and a short time later was pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Gregory Johnson at 3:57 AM, less than 90 minutes after she was reported shot. Favila's death marked the 9th murder in Killeen for 2023 as the city continues to average one per month for the year.

According the Killeen PD, the community was very helpful in the investigation, and several beneficial tips were called into Bell County Crime Stoppers.

In only a handful of days detectives were able to present their findings to the Bell County District Attorney's Office, and they were able to issue a complaint that charged Angelica Sharice Lamar Higgins, 32, with murder. You can read more about the arrest in this KWTX article.
