“What Now?” Killeen Parents React to Superintendent’s Sudden Departure
On July 23, KWTX reported that the superintendent of the Killeen Independent School District (KISD) will remain with the district for a short time before transitioning to a new role in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Jo Ann Fey has received an appointment from the board of trustees at Northside Independent School District. Dr. Fey has stated that she intends to submit her resignation to the KISD board of trustees. As a result, the board has called a special meeting for Saturday, July 26, to discuss and consider appointing an acting superintendent.

Community Pulse: How Killeen Parents Feel About KISD Superintendent Leaving
Brett Williams, president of the KISD board of trustees, stated on behalf of the board:
“On behalf of the KISD board of trustees, I want to thank Dr. Fey for her service to our students, staff, and community.” He added that Dr. Fey has led several initiatives during her tenure that will benefit the district for years to come.

However, community reactions to the news have been mixed. In speaking with parents, community leaders, and students, I found that about a small percentage of those I spoke to expressed sentiments like “good riddance” or “no hard feelings—she came, she saw, she was done.” On the other hand, some parents believe, especially after the incident earlier this year at Roy J. Smith Middle School, that rebuilding trust and preparing students for the coming school year remains her responsibility. A smaller portion of the community feels that Dr. Fey was never fully prepared for the role to begin with. The reality is this: over the past two years, we’ve experienced both the successes and the challenges that came with Dr. Fey’s leadership. Now, a new chapter begins for our students, staff, and community. In my opinion, by learning from past mistakes, we have an opportunity to grow into a stronger and more effective school district.
