As a military community, Central Texas is a place where we're always looking for ways to show our veterans that we appreciate them. This is an other opportunity, and it's as simple as sending a Valentine.

In an email from the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System (CTVHCS), Public Affairs Officer Deborah Meyer said the Olin E. Teague Veterans Medical Center in Temple and the Doris Miller Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Waco are extremely short on Valentine's Day cards for veteran patients.

Meyer hopes to encourage school children and anyone else who'd like to honor our vets and brighten their day to send Valentines to the medical centers, where they'll make it into the hands of people who've served and deserve all the love and appreciation in the world.

If you'd like to send cards to either facility, here are their addresses:

Olin E. Teague Veterans’ Medical Center
Attn: Voluntary Service (135)
1901 Veterans Memorial Drive
Temple, TX 76504

Doris Miller Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center
Attn: Voluntary Service (135)
4800 Memorial Drive
Waco, TX 76711

The public is also invited to spend part of their Valentine's Day (Friday, February 14) at either the Temple or Waco VA medical center as part of the VA's National Salute to Veteran Patients. Miss Texas 2019 Chandler Foreman will be at both celebrations, as well as Fort Hood soldiers, local students, community leaders, and members of the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System leadership team.

If you'd like to be a part of the event, activities will kick off at 9 AM at the Stracke Auditorium (Building 6) at the Doris Miller Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Waco.

The Temple event starts at 1 PM in the  Olin E. Teague Veterans Medical Center amphitheater (Building 163). Guests are welcome to enter through the valet parking entrance at Building 204.

There are also plenty of volunteer opportunities with the VA. In fact, we're told, over 61,000 volunteers contribute over 9.2 million hours to assist veterans each year.

If you'd like to get involved, reach out to your local VA or visit the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System's volunteer website.

Whatever you choose to do, please let the active duty military and veteran folks in your life know how much you love and appreciate them and their service this Valentine's Day.
