Elvis Presley Reports to Fort Hood 60 Years Ago Today
This day in 1958, Elvis Presley reported for duty at Fort Hood.
His parents came along the day Elvis reported for training with Alpha Company, 37th Armor Battalion, 2nd Armor Division. He would be responsible for driving light trucks as part of a tank crew.
At the time it was a local attorney in Killeen who rented a home to the Presley's on Oakhill Drive. They stayed there for 25 weeks while Elvis was in basic and advanced training according to the Killeen Daily Herald. Texans in Killeen that day reported a media firestorm as the future King of Rock and Roll arrived.
While Elvis was not in Central Texas for very long, he certainly left an impact. He left with around 1,360 other troops when the 3rd Armored Division left for Friedberg, Germany on September 19, 1958.
