Temple police have released the identity of a Fort Hood soldier who drowned at Temple Lake Park Sunday afternoon.

Witnesses said 26-year-old Virgil Robinson was on an inflatable pool float when he drifted away from shore. When he attempted to paddle back, he reportedly fell from the float and went under the water. He never came back up.

Robinson was reported missing around 4:57 PM. His body was retrieved from Lake Belton around 6:33 PM after a search conducted by Temple Police, Texas Parks & Wildlife Game Wardens, Bell County Sheriff's Office deputies, the US Army Corps of Engineers, Temple Fire & Rescue, Morgan's Point Resort Fire Department, Morgan's Point Resort Police Department, and Temple EMS.

Justice of the Peace David Barfield pronounced Robinson dead at the scene. Barfield has ordered the soldier's remains undergo autopsy.

Authorities did not say if Robinson was wearing a life vest at the time of the drowning.
