Depeche Mode’s ‘Personal Jesus’ Powers ‘Atomic Blonde’ Trailer

This summer will see the release of Atomic Blonde, an action movie starring Charlize Theron as a British spy. Universal Pictures' newest trailer is helped along by the stomp of Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus."

The film, directed by David Leitch (John Wick), is based on Antony Johnston and Sam Hart's graphic novel The Coldest City and defined by the studio as a "blistering blend of sleek action, gritty sexuality and dazzling style." Indeed, one of the trailer's opening scenes finds Theron easily knocking off three people in a fancy hotel room and then downing a double vodka on the rocks.

ScreenCrush reprints the official synopsis as, "The crown jewel of Her Majesty’s Secret Intelligence Service, Agent Lorraine Broughton (Theron) is equal parts spycraft, sensuality and savagery, willing to deploy any of her skills to stay alive on her impossible mission. Sent alone into Berlin to deliver a priceless dossier out of the destabilized city, she partners with embedded station chief David Percival (James McAvoy) to navigate her way through the deadliest game of spies."

The nearly three-minute clip also incorporates Kanye West's "Black Skinhead," with the two songs being intertwined in a manner that caused Consequence of Sound to cleverly call it "Personal Yeezus."

"Personal Jesus" appeared on Depeche Mode's 1990 album Violator. It became one of the band's signature hits, reaching No. 28 on Billboard's Hot 100 and No. 12 on the Dance chart, helping to propel Violator to triple-platinum status, making it their biggest-selling record in the U.S.

Atomic Blonde opens in theaters July 28.
