Monday during a random drug search with ISD officers at Shoemaker High School, a student refused to let Sauron, the Killeen ISD K-9, search their backpack.

Killeen ISD spokesperson Taina Maya told KWTX:

“The student would not allow the backpack to be searched by Sauron and was taken to the KISD Police office at the campus. Upon further investigation, police discovered a weapon in the student’s backpack,” she said.

Maya also assured students and staff that the confiscation of the weapon was a part of a "proactive initiative by KISD and safety departments".

The student was taken into custody at The Bell County Juvenile Detention Center.

This is scary.

Suppose that student got into an altercation with another student and felt the only way to deal with it was to use the weapon.

Or maybe the student felt threatened because he or she was being bullied.

In my opinion, there are a lot of questions that need to be asked before the child is punished.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that a gun was found in a Shoemaker High School student's possession. Killeen ISD spokesperson Taina Maya did not state that the weapon was a firearm. This was a misunderstanding on the part of the author and editor, and the article has been corrected. We apologize for any confusion or alarm caused by this error and will work to ensure that this mistake is not repeated.
