KWTX reports Chisholm Trail Elementary in Belton was locked down Friday morning as police searched for a truck thief who was leading officers on a chase in the area.

Williamson County officers chased the suspect North to Belton on FM 1670. FM 1670 becomes Boxer Street north of U.S. 190. Once the chase got that far the suspect exited the vehicle and ran on foot. Police called in a DPS helicopter and tracking dogs to aid in the search. To ensure the safety of students at Chisholm Trail the school was placed on a temporary lockdown.

The pursuit started in Williamson County as the suspect led deputies and Department of Public Safety troopers to the north, entering Belton on FM 1670, which becomes Boxer Street north of Interstate 14/U.S. Highway 190.

Officers kept a close eye on the school which is due east of the spot the suspect abandoned their vehicle. The man was still on the run ats of the last update.
