Over the years there have been efforts by some fine folks in the Central Texas area, specifically within Travis County, to bring Mardi Gras festivities to the Lone Star State in a big way. It should come as no surprise that the very Louisiana-oriented celebration is already commemorated in one of the Texas cities closer to the Bayou State.

This year's festivities kicked off this weekend, just as New Orleans and Lafayette, Louisiana started to get into high gear.

For quite some time, Galveston has had a very organized Mardi Gras celebration. I don't mean that as a joke. Although on the surface it appears as if it's chaos, the truth is that for a city or township to properly execute Mardi Gras, it takes months of advanced planning to make sure crowds of reveling people, some in various stages of inebriation, are managed within inches of gigantic rolling floats full of inebriated paraders throwing tiny projectiles.

If you want to head on down to Galveston, they'd love to have you. For more information, check out the official site for Galveston Mardi Gras set up by the Galveston Island convention and visitors Bureau. And lassiez les bon temps rouler!
