Netflix’s New Thriller About Serial Killer with Texas Roots
Netflix is set to release a whole new catalog of thrillers and horror movies as we approach the Halloween season! And now, one of them is all about a serial killer who called Texas home!
Streaming on Netflix on October 18, "Woman of the Hour" is the directorial debut of Anna Kendrick, who will also star in the film. The movie is all about "The Dating Game Killer" or as some knew him, Rodney Alcala.
Who Was the Dating Game Killer?
Alcala was a convicted serial killer who gained notoriety for his appearance on the popular TV show "The Dating Game" in 1978 while in the midst of his killing spree.
Alcala appeared on the TV show as "Bachelor No. 1". He won the episode after charming the female contestant, Cheryl Bradshaw, with his playful answers. However, she found him unsettling and decided not to go on the date with him—a decision that may have saved her life- Anna Kendrick will portray Bradshaw.
Alcala’s murders were particularly brutal. He took photographs of many of them, some of which were later discovered by investigators. His killing spree is believed to have started in 1971 and spanned several years, with victims ranging from teenage girls to adult women.
And, although his killing spree was in California, Alcala was a Texas native born in San Antonio. His family moved to Mexico, then to Los Angeles when he was 11.
The Texas native was eventually captured in 1979 and died in prison while awaiting executing in 2021. Alcala's case remains one of the most chilling examples of a serial killer hiding in plain sight, even briefly gaining fame on a popular TV show during his spree.
