As someone who is raising three kids in Texas with my wife after living in about a dozen other states over the past 40 years, one thing I know that is well beyond debate is Texans are a lot like Cub and Boy Scouts and they often do their best to "Be Prepared," at all times for all scenarios. When it comes to icy windshields or roads, we often struggle more than we should.

The above link is one department we fail to properly prepare for because the annual cold snap is often not much more than a harmless couple of days hovering around or below the freezing mark like in December of 2023. However, in both the previous two winters, we did get a ton of freezing rain and snow that caused wide spread power outages.

Most Texans spend the beginning of winter about the same way. It is always more fall like than winter because the temperatures are tolerant, and the only precipitation we ever get is rain, until it isn't.

So, we all go out and buy our annual windshield scraper, lose it, and then get another the following winter. Back when we all had CDs in our vehicles, we just grabbed one of the jewel cases to chip the ice off of our windshields, so we never needed a scraper.

It is recommended by many that it is better to ask forgiveness than permission, but you will never get that poor advice from me. I firmly believe it is better to be prepared, and always in a position to under promise and over deliver.
Why waste a single second on fixing an iced over windshield problem when you could have prevented it entirely? And before you open your mouth and show off your big brain with a predictable, "Just park your car in your garage, and this won't be a problem," my garage, just like yours, is a storage unit for lost ice scrapers and who knows what else.
