Texas Band Needs $50,000 To March In Sugar Bowl Parade
A band from the state of Texas is getting ready to perform in the Sugar Bowl. However, there's a giant fundraising goal standing in the way. Here's what is known at time of writing.
Band Originally Stopped From Performing, But Situation Changes
Per ABC13 Houston, Waltrip High School's Ram Band was set to march in the upcoming Sugar Bowl parade. But in August of 2024, the band was stopped from doing so. As stated by the band's booster club president, Sherry Chavez:
"We were told we could not go to New Orleans because it was a dangerous place to go."
But following that announcement, things flipped dramatically after the story was brought to the attention of the public. John Whitmire, the mayor of Houston and alum of Waltrip High, offered Houston Police to assist the band.
Band Now Able To Perform, But Major Hurdle Remains
Thankfully, the band was able to rejoin the parade lineup. In a comment from WorldStrides, who is helping prepare the trip:
"Now that the decision has been reversed by the district, WorldStrides is working with vendors to ensure lodging and logistical bookings are set for families. We look forward to ensuring that Waltrip HS enjoys a safe and enriching experience in New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl Parade."
But the one thing that the band needs now? None other than $50,000 for the trip. So it looks like fundraising will be needed for the band to get the parade.
As this a developing story, we will have more information when it becomes available.
