Waco Zoo Welcomes Adorable Little Blue Heron Chick
I just shared the exciting news about a baby giraffe born at Cameron Park Zoo, but now Waco's favorite zoo is in the news again, and this time with a much smaller but equally important baby!
A Special Chick
Cameron Park Zoo has welcomed a baby chick. They are celebrating the hatching of a Little Blue Heron. This is special because this zoo has the world's only known fully breeding colony of Little Blue Herons, and now there are nine of them in this colony with the addition of this chick!

Winged Help
The Little Blue Heron is "Least Concern" for now. That status can change, so we need to help. They require healthy wetland habitats, which is a worldwide problem, as many wetlands have disappeared. They are increasingly at risk of decline as their habitat is reduced
Legal Protection and Monitoring
Little Blue Herons are protected under federal and state law (the Migratory Bird Treaty Act), and Cameron Park Zookeepers are taking good care of this new chick. They are hopeful that this positive news can help people understand the importance of protecting wetlands, along with the wildlife that depends on them.
To Waco's credit
Having the world's only zoo breeding colony of this species is a big deal and it shows just how much of a conservation commitment Cameron Park Zoo can make. Waco is continuing to show that it may be doing big things for nature even with the Little Blue Herons.
Overall, Central Texas continues to hatch good news.
