Are Changes to the Famous Austin 6th Street Making it Better?
I spend about three to four nights a week out on 6th Street in Downtown Austin performing standup comedy at The Comedy Mothership or at the Sunset Strip Comedy Club. It's a big part of my life, so it's interesting to see the changes that are taking place in the area.
One of the big changes to the Dirty 6th is that they have opened the street up to car traffic again on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. Up until a couple of weeks ago, the streets were blocked off on those nights, and pedestrians were free to roam back and forth from each side of the street in order to move bar to bar in a direct manner. Now, there are barriers put up along the sidewalk to prevent people from crossing the street at any point other than designated crosswalks. This is an effort the city is taking to allow the cars back on the street while preventing people from getting run over that may be used to jaywalking.
KXAN was able to interview Austin Mayor, Kirk Watson, about the purpose of the changes taking place on 6th Street, and ultimately, the goal is to bring more business to the area during the daytime. The city wants to make 6th Street a safer environment that will offer more restaurants and retail to accompany the already vibrant night life.
