You’ll Never Guess the One Word That Makes Up the Texas State Motto
Welcome to the great state of Texas, where the Dallas Cowboys are respected, the women are gorgeous, and the barbecue is even prettier. When you enter Texas, everybody knows the saying “Don’t Mess with Texas.” For a long time, I thought that was the state motto, but to my surprise—being a born and raised Texan—it is not.

What Is Texas State Motto?
According to the Texas State Historical Association, an independent nonprofit organization founded in 1897, if you thought “Don’t Mess with Texas” was the official state motto, you are wrong. In 1930, the Texas Legislature decided on the motto, and in February of that year the word “Friendship” was officially adopted as the Texas motto by the 41st Texas Legislature.
How Did The State Of Texas Become The "Friendship State" ?
The reason behind this choice comes from the name “Texas,” also known as “Tejas,” which is derived from a Caddo Indian word often translated to mean “friend” or “ally.” I’ve definitely said more than once that Texas is one of the friendliest states I’ve ever experienced. Beyond our Southern hospitality, it’s simply the good people who live here—and learning that “Friendship” is our state motto makes all the sense in the world.
