Thanksgiving is finally over, so make room for Christmas in Texas. It’s one of my favorite times of the year. It’s when the family gets together, the weather gets cold, and—most importantly—Christmas movies start happening.

When do Texans Put Up The Christmas Tree?

At the beginning of the month, I asked Texans a simple question: How early do you set up your Christmas tree? And the answers truly surprised me. I feel like Central Texans take the saying “stay ready so you don’t have to get ready” completely out of context, because when I went to social media to ask, I was shocked. I thought that anyone who celebrates Christmas would usually put their tree up at the beginning of December—but I was absolutely wrong. A lot of Texans told me that right after Thanksgiving is when the Christmas decorations come out and the Christmas tree goes up. Honestly, I can see that and it makes sense.

But what really surprised me were the people who commented that Christmas starts for them in October. That’s right—right after the kiddos go trick-or-treating. Texans called in and sent comments explaining that’s when the Christmas supplies come out and the tree goes up. To be honest, I think that’s a brilliant idea. People do decorate for Thanksgiving, but it’s usually centerpieces and tableware rather than full-house decorations. Sure, you might have a pumpkin or two outside your home, but it’s nothing like decorating for Christmas.

Christmas Trees In October Is Normal Texas

So keep in mind: if you’re coming from out of town in November to visit family or friends in Texas, there’s a good chance you’ll see a Christmas tree up before Thanksgiving—and here in Texas, we’re perfectly OK with that.
