The rise of the measles virus in Texas has become more alarming than many Texans could have imagined. It baffles me that people are not taking this disease as seriously as they should. The outbreak continues to spread in our great state, and according to the Austin American-Statesman, since the beginning of the year, Texas has seen over 200 reported cases of measles, including 29 hospitalizations and the death of one child. One child’s death is one too many when it comes to such a dangerous disease, and the rise in cases continues in Texas.

Texans are noticing that the outbreak is concentrated more in West Texas, with Gaines County reporting the highest number of cases. Recently, Central Texas has seen only one case in the past 20 days, but unfortunately, the child who contracted the measles was too young to be vaccinated and had traveled outside the country.

We urge Texans to take the disease seriously and handle it properly. Measles is the most contagious disease in the world, and 90% of people exposed to the virus—who are either unvaccinated or have weakened immune systems—are likely to become infected. If you experience symptoms such as fever, runny nose, cough, or conjunctivitis, please seek medical attention immediately. Additionally, if you develop a rash that starts at the head and spreads down to the body or a rash that begins as sore spots in your mouth, you could be infected with measles. Do not ignore these warning signs.
