A man on Reddit called out his cousin, Debra, after she bragged about a big purchase on social media, despite owing him roughly $1,450 after she "slammed the door" of their rental car into a parked car.

"The rental car was under my name, and consequently I was liable for the excess payment. It's been over eight months and she has yet to pay me back. Debra argued that the rental car was shared among all seven cousins, and that accidents were a part of the risk of sharing a rental vehicle," he wrote.

Some of their cousins agreed to split the cost, but the man feels since it was Debra's "avoidable and reckless mistake," she should pay the fee.

"Either way, because we couldn't come to an agreement, what ended up happening was that no one has paid me a cent. After a few months of hounding Debra, and largely getting ignored, she broke down in tears claiming that she's financially struggling at the moment, and can barely make ends meet," he continued, arguing that she's "just bad with her finances."

Eventually, the man forgot about the moneyuntil his cousin boasted about a big purchase online.

"Debra posted a photo of a Tiffany & Co. necklace with the caption, 'Hard work pays off! Success isn't easy, but it's shiny!' I looked up the necklace; it costs [$600]. I responded with, 'If you were half as successful as you are pretending to be, you'd pay me back the [$1,450] you owe me.'"

He admitted he acted out of anger, but found it funny when other people commented on her post claiming she owed them money as well.

"Debra deleted her post several hours later, but hasn't said a word to me. However, she must have complained to the other cousins, because two of our cousins reached out and said 'You went too far,' and that 'You should have kept the matter within the family,'" he concluded.

Users in the comments section weighed in on the situation.

"To start, let's dismiss outright her silly claim that the cost for the damage she caused should be split among everyone who rented the car. So yes, she owes you $1,450. Next, I disagree with the family members (and some commenters) who said the public shaming went too far, because your efforts to get paid back through less controversial means had clearly gone nowhere," one person wrote.

"She's very good with money. She just likes transferring it from other people to herself. But people like that rely on everyone being placid about it because it is not worth aggravation," another commented.

"In the meantime, file a case against her in small claims and put it on your Facebook. And for opinionated family members, tell them they're welcome to contribute: put up or shut up," someone else advised.
