Texas Ranks Low In Voter Turnout
While we do not have the lowest voter turnout in America, Texas still ranks fifth at 54% suggesting that there is a big challenge in the Lone Star State when it comes to engaging voters whether it's mid-term or presidential elections.
Why Does Texas Have Low Voter Turnout?
According to Governing, out of Texas' 19.5 million people, only 42% cast a ballot in the 2022 general election. One theory is that older people are more likely to vote, but the Texas population is relatively young compared to other states.
Also, some states like Minnesota, make it more convenient to vote and even allow voting registration on election day. Texas has a law in place that only allows residents to register to vote 30 days prior to an election.
Steps Texas Can Take To Raise Voter Turnout
Despite being the second most populous state in the U.S., Texas ranks 5th lowest in voter turnout. But there are some things that the state can do to help alleviate that low number including increasing voter education, expanding early voting and voting by mail, and improving accessibility and transportation to and from polls.
They say everything is bigger in Texas, but voting is not one of them. Don't forget to rock the vote on November 5th, Texas!
