Close Encounters of the Third Kind will forever be one of sci-fi cinema’s most lasting cultural touchstones. One of Steven Spielberg’s best, it’s a beautiful tale of wonder, obsession, and humanity’s relationship with the rest of the cosmos. It’s the kind of movie that posits that, rather than conquer us, all aliens really want to do is be our friends, and it’s coming back to theaters this September in a gorgeous 4K re-release.

Sony Pictures released a full trailer for the movie today, and it looks just marvelous. It’ll hit theaters for just one week starting September 1 in honor of the movie’s 40th anniversary, but before that will have its world premiere in the Venezia Classici section of the Venice Film Festival. (Also, thanks to this trailer, now I finally know what “the third kind” actually means.)

Close Encounters stars Richard Dreyfuss as a line worker who has an encounter with an alien intelligence, that turns out to be one of a group that’s trying to make contact with humans. He, along with a select group of people, is sent visions of a strange location where, if all goes well, first contact will finally be made. The movie also stars Teri Garr, Melinda Dillon, and Francois Truffaut. If you haven’t seen it, don’t miss out on this opportunity. And if you have seen it, well, it’s never not a good time to see it again.
