Austin Trail of Lights Might be Modified

As with everything else this year, the traditional Trail of Lights is facing some modifications due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to a report from News4SA, the community event in Austin, known as the "Trail of Lights," may be transformed into a drive-thru event only.  Officials are concerned about the spread of COVID-19 and are asking that the public does not walk through Zilker park.

Typically the event sees 400,000 people every year and hosts a variety of food trucks, musical entertainment, and other holiday activities for guests to enjoy.

The Austin City Council recently released an ordinance pertaining to the event that states, "A traditional in-person event is not possible, safe or in alignment with protecting the community’s health.“ The council is set to vote on September 17 on the drive-thru modification that would allow the event to proceed.

The drive-thru would be for allowed for 30 days, and approximately 1300 cars per night can be safely accommodated. If the council passes the ordinance, visitors will be able to attend the drive-thru free of charge each night.

Even if the ordinance is passed, organizers will need to present an event plan to be approved by the Austin Public Health’s and comply with Austin's special event permitting process.
