The Austin Police Department, along with several other local police departments, will be providing free gun locks to gun owners in the community.

According to a press release from the Austin PD, residents can receive a free gun lock for the safety of their self and their families. You can pick up a gun lock from the following locations, Mon-Friday, 8 AM-4 PM.

  • Clinton-Hunter South Substation, 404 Ralph Ablanedo Dr.
  • Robert T. Martinez Central East Substation, 812 Springdale Rd.
  • APD Headquarters, 715 East 8th St.
  • Jaime Padron North Substation, 12425 Lamplight Village Ave. - Call 512-974-5500 to schedule a pick up.

The free gun locks are part of a national education program called Project ChildSafe. The program is part of a federal gun violence prevention program, and helps raise awareness about gun safety.

To date, Project ChildSafe  has partnered with over 15,000 law enforcement agencies in communities across the country. Other cities in our area that are also partnered with Project ChildSafe include:

  • Copperas Cove
